Introducing Laya by Comma Projects Q: Where did you draw your inspiration from for Laya? A: I've always been drawn to contemporary Mediterranean homes, characterised by their crisp white exteriors complemented by natural stone accents. Inside, I aimed to blend the serene ambiance of a day spa with the Mediterranean characteristics, but then also tried to squeeze a bit of the chic sophistication of a boutique hotel in the scheme for Villa B. Q: What was the process of locking in a theme for Laya, did you struggle with this when you may have had so many other ideas or design choices you wanted to do? A: The theme for Layà Villas stemmed from the street name, "Morotai," named after an island significant in WWII. "Layà," meaning freedom in Filipino, inspired the design concept. The goal was to create a peaceful and distinctive environment, diverging from typical suburban homes. Q: What was your most risky design choice with this build? A: The boldest decision was the design direction taken for Villa B. With the intention of retaining it, there was freedom to explore unconventional choices such as vibrant tiles and cabinetry, lending a hospitality vibe. The response to these choices was overwhelmingly positive. Q: What was your toughest challenge when creating Laya? A: Earning respect from some of the consultants earlier on. And sometimes having to convince the trades why the changes I’m making would have a better design outcome. Q: What was your greatest win when creating Laya? A: When I give personal tours of the villas and hear people’s feedback and comments first-hand. For them to say they feel “calm” without me even mentioning any of my design objectives/vision to them confirmed and encouraged me that my design decisions were done right. To see the emotions that the spaces I created that were evoked amongst people has been very rewarding. Q: How did you know when to make the high-end luxe design choices and what was your process for splurging versus saving to have that perfect balance and maximise your sale results? A: I kept thinking about where the best photos would be taken - those hero shots. I wanted those spaces to be top-notch, so I paid extra attention to the details. And I made sure to include some unique touches, like built-in window bench seats and cool ceiling designs, to really make the place special. Jenns project took 20 months to complete from initial floor plan phase to completion of construction, Jenn told us that her favourite part of both Villas was their ensuites and powder rooms.
